How long does a private jet flight take?

Flight time depends mainly on distance and aircraft class. A turboprop such as the King Air 350 cruises at around 500 km/h, a light jet at just over 700 km/h and an ultra long range jet like the Gulfstream G650 at up to 900 km/h. On a route like Munich – Nice that is a matter of minutes; on Frankfurt – Dubai it adds up to more than an hour.

On top come taxi time, climb and descent and, on long routes, fuel stops. The calculator accounts for all of this and shows block time — from pushback to parking at the destination.

Range and fuel stops

Not every jet can fly every route nonstop. With reserves, light jets reach about 2,800 km, super midsize jets around 5,500 km and ultra long range jets more than 11,000 km. If the destination is further away, the operator plans a fuel stop of roughly 45 minutes.

For transatlantic flights or routes to Asia the larger class often pays off: it costs more per hour but saves stops and therefore time.

Calculating the distance between airports

We calculate distance as the great-circle distance — the shortest path over the globe — and also show it in nautical miles, the standard unit in aviation. Because aircraft follow airways and approach procedures, the distance actually flown is slightly longer; the flight time already includes this.

How we calculate

  • Distance: great-circle calculation from both airports’ coordinates, plus 5% for airways and approach procedures.
  • Flight time: distance flown divided by the class’s typical cruise speed, plus 15 minutes for climb and descent and 10 minutes of taxi per take-off and landing.
  • Fuel stops: added once the route exceeds practical range with reserves, 45 minutes on the ground per stop.
  • Wind is not included. Strong headwinds (typically westbound across the Atlantic) can add 10–15% to flight time; tailwinds shorten it.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the flight time calculator?

On European routes the estimate is usually within 10–15 minutes of actual block time. Differences come from wind, air traffic control, holding and the specific aircraft model. The operator states the binding flight time in the quote.

Is a private jet faster than an airline flight?

Barely in the air — airliners and business jets cruise at similar speeds. The time saving happens on the ground: no check-in lead time, short walks through the private terminal and no connections. Our travel time comparison shows what that means on your route.

What is block time?

Block time runs from the moment the chocks are removed for taxi until the aircraft is parked at the destination. Charter prices are usually calculated per block hour.

Which private jet can cross the Atlantic nonstop?

Routes like Frankfurt – New York (about 6,200 km) need at least a heavy jet; the US West Coast or the Caribbean usually require an ultra long range jet such as the Gulfstream G650 or Global 7500. Light and midsize jets have to refuel in Iceland or Greenland.

Why does the return flight sometimes take longer?

Because of the jet stream: at mid-latitudes high-altitude winds usually blow from west to east. Westbound flights face headwinds and take longer, eastbound flights are faster.
