How the private jet tracker works

ADS-B: the open radio signal of every aircraft

Modern aircraft broadcast their position, altitude, speed and a unique 24-bit address several times per second. ADS-B is mandatory for most jets in Europe and the US. The signal is unencrypted and can be received with simple equipment.

Thousands of volunteers receive the signals

Community networks such as adsb.lol and adsb.fi aggregate data from tens of thousands of private receivers. We filter out all business jets and turboprops and refresh the map roughly every ten seconds.

Flights, routes and CO₂

From the positions we detect take-offs and landings and match them to the nearest airport. The CO₂ estimate multiplies the typical fuel burn of the aircraft class by flight time and 3.16 kg of CO₂ per kg of jet fuel.

Why some jets are missing

Receiver coverage is sparse over oceans and remote regions. In addition, US owners can ask via the LADD and PIA programmes for their aircraft not to be shown publicly or to use a rotating address.

How can I track a private jet live?

Type the registration (e.g. N628TS), callsign, aircraft type or a person’s name into the search above. The map flies to the jet and the side panel shows altitude, speed, heading and the route so far.

Where does the data come from?

Positions come from publicly broadcast ADS-B signals collected by the community networks. We do not use any non-public sources.

Does "attributed to" mean the person is on board?

No. The attribution is based on public reports and registry data about an aircraft’s owner or user. ADS-B data cannot show who is actually on board — jets are also chartered, leased or sold.

Why can’t I see a particular jet?

It may be out of receiver range, on the ground without an active transponder, or its owner has requested blocking (e.g. through the US LADD programme).

How accurate are the CO₂ figures?

They are estimates: typical hourly fuel burn of the aircraft class multiplied by observed flight time, converted at 3.16 kg of CO₂ per kg of jet fuel. Payload, wind and the exact model can change the real value considerably.

Can I have an entry removed?

Yes. Email [email protected] with the registration and your reason. We review removal requests and corrections promptly.

Can I fly on one of these jets myself?

Many of the types shown regularly fly empty to their next assignment. You can often book these empty legs on PrivJet for much less than a regular charter.

Data source: public ADS-B data

All positions come from publicly broadcast ADS-B signals that every aircraft transmits unencrypted and that volunteers around the world receive. Data may be delayed, incomplete or inaccurate.

Linking an aircraft to a well-known person is based on public sources such as media reports and registry data. "Jet attributed to X" explicitly does not mean that this person is on board or ordered the flight — aircraft are also chartered, sold or used by others.
